Protect Animals From Distress and Death Caused by Illegal Fireworks

Target: Keith Rowley, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago

Goal: Implement and enforce regulations on fireworks usage to protect animals and vulnerable individuals from harm.

The unregulated use of fireworks in Trinidad and Tobago has caused immense distress and physical harm to animals, with one shelter even mourning the loss of a rescue dog, Jeremiah. This tragic incident highlights the devastating impact that loud and sudden fireworks displays can have on animals, particularly those already in vulnerable conditions. Numerous pet owners and shelters reported animals injuring themselves in attempts to escape perceived danger, creating additional burdens on non-governmental organizations tasked with their care.

In addition to animals, the disruptive effects of fireworks extend to individuals with health conditions, the elderly, and young children. While legislation on animal welfare has been introduced, including The Animal (Diseases and Importation) (Amendment) Act of 2020, enforcement remains lacking. The absence of time restrictions and regulations on fireworks exacerbates the problem, leaving pet owners and animal shelters helpless in preventing harm to animals.

Immediate action is necessary to regulate fireworks usage, enforce existing animal welfare laws, and protect both animals and vulnerable individuals. Stricter controls, such as designated times and locations for fireworks, will help mitigate the harm caused by these events while ensuring accountability for violations.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear PM Keith Rowley,

The unregulated use of fireworks in Trinidad and Tobago has caused immense distress and harm to animals, including the tragic death of a rescue dog at a shelter in St. James. Numerous animals, in their panic, have injured themselves attempting to escape the noise, creating additional emotional and financial strain on pet owners and animal welfare organizations. The impacts of fireworks are not limited to animals; they also harm individuals with health conditions, the elderly, and children.

While the 2020 amendment to Animal (Diseases, Importation, Health and Welfare) Act introduced vital animal welfare standards, the lack of enforcement has rendered these protections ineffective. The absence of regulations on fireworks usage, including designated times and locations, leaves animals and vulnerable individuals at continued risk of harm.

We urge you to take immediate action to implement and enforce regulations on fireworks usage. Stricter controls, public awareness campaigns, and collaboration with law enforcement are essential to protect animals and communities from the distressing and often tragic consequences of unregulated fireworks.

Sincerely,
