Cats Left in Box on Side of the Road Deserve Justice

Target: Susan Aitken, Leader of Glasgow City Council, Scotland

Goal: Promote responsible pet ownership and support local animal shelters in rehoming abandoned cats.

Two-year-old cat sisters Gaby and Bree were discovered abandoned in a box labeled “we are homeless” by a dog walker in Glasgow. Fortunately, they were taken in by Cats Protection, where they received much-needed care and support. Now, these sweet sisters are ready for a forever home, but their story highlights a growing issue: the increasing number of abandoned animals in the area.

Helyn Nicholl, Deputy Centre Manager at Cats Protection’s Glasgow Cat Centre, reports a worrying rise in the number of cats being dumped or brought to the shelter due to financial struggles. This situation reflects the wider impact of the cost of living crisis on pet ownership, with many families unable to afford to care for their beloved pets.

While Gaby and Bree are in good health and ready for adoption, their story serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting animal shelters and promoting responsible pet ownership. Glasgow City Council must take action to ensure that animal welfare remains a priority and that resources are made available to help struggling pet owners before they are forced to abandon their animals. Take immediate action.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Ms. Aitken,

I am writing to bring your attention to the increasing issue of abandoned pets in Glasgow, as highlighted by the recent story of Gaby and Bree, two-year-old cats found in a box labeled “we are homeless.” While these sweet sisters have been fortunate enough to be taken in by Cats Protection and are now ready for a new home, their situation is becoming all too common.

Helyn Nicholl, Deputy Centre Manager at the Glasgow Cat Centre, has noted a troubling rise in the number of abandoned animals in the area, which is likely linked to the rising cost of living. Many families can no longer afford to care for their pets and, as a result, are either dumping them or bringing them to shelters for rehoming. While Gaby and Bree are now safe, many other animals are at risk of neglect or abandonment.

I urge Glasgow City Council to take action by promoting responsible pet ownership, supporting local animal shelters, and providing resources for pet owners who may be struggling financially. By working together, we can ensure that pets like Gaby and Bree have a chance at a better life and prevent further cases of abandonment.

Sincerely,
