Fight Light Pollution in Rural Areas to Preserve Night Skies

Target: Janet Stanek, Secretary of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment,

Goal: Safeguard the night skies for stargazing and other celestial observations.

In the tranquil expanses of rural Kansas, a less-acknowledged form of pollution encroaches upon the natural beauty of the night sky. Light pollution, emanating from poorly designed outdoor lighting, is robbing residents and visitors alike of the chance to marvel at celestial wonders. This issue not only dims the stars but also disrupts nocturnal ecosystems and human health.

The problem manifests in the form of skyglow, an artificial brightness that washes out starlight and celestial events. This phenomenon is particularly disheartening for amateur astronomers, nature enthusiasts, and anyone who finds solace in a starlit sky. Moreover, light pollution has been linked to adverse health effects in humans and wildlife, including disrupted sleep patterns and altered behaviors.

Sign the petition below to urge the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to enact robust regulations aimed at minimizing light pollution in rural areas. These regulations should include adopting energy-efficient, dark-sky-friendly lighting solutions and public awareness campaigns about the importance of preserving the night skies.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Stanek,

The degradation of night skies in rural Kansas due to light pollution demands immediate attention. This issue not only steals the splendor of celestial bodies but also wreaks havoc on nocturnal ecosystems and human well-being. The evidence stands clear: skyglow, diminished visibility of celestial events, and adverse health impacts are now the unfortunate outcomes of inaction.

Now marks the time for decisive measures. We implore you to roll out and enforce a comprehensive strategy that mitigates light pollution and fosters responsible outdoor lighting. This plan should encompass the use of energy-efficient lighting, public education initiatives, and rigorous enforcement protocols.

Neglecting this issue will only perpetuate the loss of the night skies and the detrimental effects on both wildlife and human health. We cannot stand idly by as the beauty and wonder of the celestial canopy fade into obscurity.

We implore you to prioritize the protection and restoration of rural Kansas’ night skies by combating light pollution with an unyielding commitment and swift action.

Sincerely,

  1. Besides blocking the beauty of the stars, planets and other exciting celestial events, such as comets and meteor showers, the artificial lights, depending on where they are, can disrupt nighttime bird migrations and baby turtles’ journey to the ocean. The natural world is being overwhelmed by the things that humans take for granted. We really don’t need ten lights on the outsides of our houses or giant spotlights in our yards. Turn them off, save on electric, and just add a small down-facing solar light by your door. Let the people like me enjoy the night sky and the wonders it evokes.
