Reduce Pesticide Use to Promote Sustainable Farming Practices

Target: Lieutenant Governor Suzanne Crouch, Indiana Department of Agriculture

Goal: Promote sustainable farming practices to reduce pesticide use.

In Indiana, the widespread use of pesticides in conventional farming poses a significant threat to the environment, public health, and the long-term sustainability of the agricultural systems. Excessive pesticide use has been linked to soil degradation, water pollution, harm to non-target species, and an increased risk of chronic health conditions in humans. The overreliance on chemical pesticides also undermines the resilience of the farms against pests and exacerbates the loss of biodiversity.

Historically, the state’s agricultural policies have favored conventional farming methods, often discouraging sustainable alternatives. This has perpetuated a cycle of pesticide dependency that puts the environment, wildlife, and communities at risk. Furthermore, it perpetuates a system that often leaves farmers trapped in a cycle of rising input costs.

The urgency of addressing this issue cannot be overstated. Transition is needed towards sustainable farming practices prioritizing soil health, natural pest management, and reduced pesticide use. Such procedures can protect water resources, foster biodiversity, and enhance the long-term viability of the agricultural sector.

Sign the petition below to demand that the Indiana Department of Agriculture take immediate action to promote sustainable farming practices and reduce pesticide use in the state.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Lieutenant Governor Crouch,

The urgency of the moment calls for bold action. The current trajectory of pesticide use in Indiana’s agriculture is unsustainable and detrimental to the environment, the health, and the future of our farming communities. We implore you to recognize the imperative need for change.

Policies that incentivize and support sustainable farming practices, such as integrated pest management and organic agriculture, are both a choice and a necessity. They will reduce the environmental impact of agriculture, protect water resources, safeguard biodiversity, and promote the health and well-being of the citizens.

We urge you to prioritize the development and implementation of these policies, to provide farmers with the tools, resources, and knowledge needed to transition to sustainable practices. Together, we can create a future where the farms thrive, the environment flourishes, and the communities prosper.

Sincerely,

  1. All states need to stop the pollution caused by industry spraying everything in sight and killing everything in sight as well. Sometimes I wonder the benefit to all this spraying. Policies that incentivize and support sustainable farming practices, such as integrated pest management and organic agriculture, are both a choice and a necessity. They will reduce the environmental impact of agriculture, protect water resources, safeguard biodiversity, and promote the health and well-being of the citizens. This is the only sane approach to these problems and must be addressed immediately. Please do so as life is worth it!
