Save Cities From Drowning in Floods By Promoting Green Infrastructure

Target: Ned Lamont, Governor of Connecticut

Goal: Implement green infrastructure in urban areas to combat and prevent flooding.

In Connecticut, the growing menace of flooding is casting a long, ominous shadow over urban areas. This threat is not an isolated incident but rather a product of the evolving climate and rapid urbanization. The landscape, once characterized by permeable surfaces that allowed rainwater to seep into the ground, has been increasingly covered with impermeable materials like asphalt and concrete. Consequently, when heavy rains descend upon these urban landscapes, the earth can no longer absorb the deluge as it once did.

This transformation has strained drainage systems to their limits, causing them to falter under the weight of excess water. As a result, urban flooding has become an alarming and recurrent reality.

This isn’t just an inconvenience; it’s a crisis that jeopardizes the safety of communities, the integrity of infrastructure, and the health of the environment. To stave off the impending deluge, proactive intervention is essential. Otherwise, these urban floodwaters will persist, wreaking havoc on the urban areas, infrastructure, and the delicate balance of the natural world.

Sign the petition below to demand that the Connecticut State Legislature and Governor’s Office prioritize and support policies that advance green infrastructure in urban areas, making them resilient against flooding and environmentally sustainable.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Lamont,

The undeniable reality of climate change underscores the urgent need for proactive measures in the beloved state. Flooding in Connecticut’s urban areas is not merely a consequence of heavier rainfall; it’s an outcome of past decisions and an impending threat to the future.

Green infrastructure represents an opportunity to reshape the urban landscape, to make it not only flood-resistant but also ecologically vibrant. We urge you to enact legislation and policies that incentivize, fund, and mandate the incorporation of green infrastructure solutions across the cities and towns.

Green infrastructure offers a sustainable solution. By integrating natural features and processes into urban design, it manages stormwater effectively and reduces flooding risk. Notably, this approach also enhances air and water quality, fosters urban biodiversity, and mitigates the urban heat island effect.

By doing so, we protect the communities, safeguard the infrastructure, and leave a lasting legacy of environmental stewardship for future generations.

Sincerely,
