Target: Nawaf Salam, President of International Court of Justice
Goal: Investigate and prosecute accusations of war crimes in Tigray.
For two years, a brutal military campaign unfolded in Tigray, a semi-independent region of Ethiopia. After claims that a rebel group attacked a military base in the region, Ethiopian forces entered and undertook actions that many in Tigray and in the international community believe to be genocide. Even a year after a supposed truce, routine reports of fresh atrocities were emerging.
These atrocities allegedly included forced expulsions, detention, torture, rape, intentional starvation, denial of medical care, and mass executions. During the two-year military intervention alone, over half a million Tigray citizens lost their lives. Tens of thousands were displaced, and many fear returning home because forces who they charge committed war crimes have gone unpunished. The Ethiopian government has refused to open investigations itself, and it has refused the help of international investigators as well.
Advocates have called for the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to bring Ethiopian officials before its court. Sign the petition below to echo these renewed calls for justice.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear President Salam,
Military forces allegedly gunned down civilians trying to flee a brutal invasion. This incident represents one of four ways that Ethiopia’s military forces reportedly violated the Genocide Convention over a multi-year period. The prolonged military invasion of Tigray, as well as multiple alleged violations of a truce over a year later, more than merit a full investigation and ultimate accountability.
The United Nations, in addition to independent reports from other agencies, point to systemic campaigns of terror and ethnic cleansing. You must take action where the Ethiopian government refuses. Please bring this troubling case before the ICJ and ensure Tigray’s citizens have the voices of the living and the lost recognized at last.
Sincerely,
[Your Name Here]
