Success: Arctic Drilling Cancelled in a Win for Environment

Target: Joe Biden, President of the United States

Goal: Support cancellation of drilling leases that would have harmed Arctic lands and habitats.

The Secretary of the Interior has called it “one of the most sensitive landscapes on Earth.” The president has reiterated that it is “warming more than twice as fast as the rest of the world.” And because of these realities and because of the amazing tapestry of wildlife that call this region home, advocates like the signers of this ForceChange petition have rallied for the protection of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. President Biden had previously promised to safeguard this critically important habitat, and now he is making good on that vow.

Following an “environmental review” largely run and vetted by fossil fuel lobbyists, the prior administration slipped a requirement for drilling on the refuge into its tax cut bill. For years, environmentalists have worked to reverse this destructive decision. When the Biden administration announced it was canceling no less than seven drilling leases for oil in the refuge, this move signaled a major victory. The plans for protection also include over 12 million acres of land around Alaska and the Arctic that would receive federal safeguards and a ban on drilling.
