Target: Elizabeth Maruma Mrema, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity
Goal: Support pledge to protect 30 percent of Earth’s lands and waters by 2030.
With more living species than ever before facing endangerment and possible extinction, biodiversity has become a critical cornerstone of any talks about environmental progress. This ForceChange petition brought attention to the issue and called on leaders to make strong and lasting commitments toward protecting habitats and the animals and plants that call them home. At a recent global conference, the world finally listened.
After intense negotiations that came down to the wire, the COP15 United Nations Biodiversity Conference concluded with the Kunming-Montreal Pact. This agreement, supported by nearly 200 countries, pledges protection and restoration for a minimum of 30 percent of the Earth’s most vulnerable land and water spaces. Moreover, the nations have made a collective commitment to stop extinction caused by human activity.
Several key objectives will help make realization of these goals possible. For one, a biodiversity fund in the amount of 30 billion dollars will be established so that impoverished nations and communities can invest in the resources necessary to combat climate change. In addition, environmentally detrimental subsidies to special interests will be phased out, the contributions of indigenous people will be emphasized, and concrete conservation management policies will receive essential backing.
Sign the petition below to applaud this breakthrough in biodiversity protection.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Executive Secretary Maruma Mrema,
The Kunming-Montreal Pact has the potential to usher in a new and better era for the world’s animals, plants, lands, and waters. With nearly a third of at-risk habitats being protected by 2030, endangered species will have a chance to resurge and thrive. And the world will be one step closer to meeting critical environmental goals.
Thank you for helping make this milestone possible.
Sincerely,
