Save Hundreds of Penguins From Death Due to Climate Change

Target: Joseph R. Biden, President of the United States

Goal: Protect Brazilian wildlife from rapidly intensifying tropical storms by decreasing greenhouse gas emissions.

Earlier this August, a devastating cyclone in Santa Catarina, Brazil washed up and killed more than 600 Magellanic penguins. Penguins are easy targets for extratropical cyclones and other natural disasters due to their inability to fly, and stand little chance against 100 km per hour winds, as were recorded during Brazil’s August cyclone. These species are listed as near threatened on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, and continuations in tropical disasters could very well put this species at further risk. Scientists believe many other animals—including other Magellanic penguins and endangered sea turtles, some of which were found dead in the water—most certainly died from the cyclone, but have yet to wash ashore.

The observed trend of rapidly intensifying tropical cyclones and other drastic weather patterns is likely the result of climate change, experts say. And conditions are only expected to worsen. As storms continue to increase in strength and frequency, they will continue to threaten vulnerable species and wreak havoc on local ecosystems. While Brazil accounts for a little bit above 1% of all the world’s global emissions, they are bearing the brunt of wealthier countries’ greed.

Sign this petition to demand the U.S. take initiative towards decreasing our emissions and protect wildlife.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Biden,

Although Brazil accounts for a mere 1% of all the world’s global emissions, they are bearing the brunt of America’s greed. Recently, a destructive cyclone killed more than 600 Magellanic penguins, thus threatening future penguin populations and the ecosystems to which they belong. Intensifications in weather–such as this cyclone and other recent hurricanes and floods–are one of the many results of climate change.

We are asking you, Mr. Biden, to do your part in helping to reduce the U.S.’s emissions and protect other nations and their wildlife from suffering. The bloodshed is on America’s hands.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
