Success: Historic Investments Made in Climate and Clean Energy

Target: Chuck Schumer, U.S. Senate Majority Leader

Goal: Support clean energy investments intended to slash dangerous carbon emissions.

Floods ae ravaging rural regions, lakes are draining to historic lows, wildfires are destroying natural habitats and communities, and record-setting heat waves and droughts are threatening lives and livelihoods. Americans are witnessing the beginnings of the calamities long predicted by scientists in the absence of urgent action on the climate crisis. This ForceChange petition and its supporters pled with lawmakers to stop making pledges and to start making meaningful investments and reforms. After months of back-and-forth and give-and-take debates, they have finally listened.

The Senate recently voted to pass the Inflation Reduction Act, the House is expected to follow suit, and then President Biden’s signature will make the act law. In addition to initiatives intended to lower inflation and reduce burdensome healthcare costs, the comprehensive package also provides some important boosts to environmental causes. Among the key climate-related items are tax credits, grants, and loans for clean energy, rebates for electric vehicles, and pollution-preventing provisions for grossly impacted low-income communities. Altogether, the package gifts a historic 370 billion-dollar investment in combatting the climate crisis. Experts project that collectively, these investments could reduce carbon emissions that fuel global warming by 40 percent through 2030.

Sign the petition below to thank the Senate leader who played an instrumental role in negotiating this important environmental investment.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senator Schumer,

The Inflation Reduction Act literally rose from the ashes of seeming failure and gridlock. If this bill did not pass, the opportunity for meaningful action on lowered prescription drug costs, extended healthcare coverage, inflation, and the climate crisis may have been lost. Now, these important issues that affect every American—and especially the climate crisis that impacts the entire world—are being taken seriously and addressed.

This surprise compromise was made possible by your diligent efforts and was a welcome development. Thank you for not giving up on a better, healthier, and cleaner future.

Sincerely,
