Target: US Senator Kyrsten Sinema, Arizona
In a surprising turn of events, Senators Manchin and Schumer announced they had reached an agreement which could lead to the passage of landmark climate legislation. Among other climate measures, the new bill calls for a 40% economy-wide cut in emissions from 2005 levels by 2030 and would allocate $370 billion into “energy security and climate change.” If passed, this bill would be the biggest legislative climate action enacted by the US.Senate Democrats hope to hold a vote on this legislation very soon, potentially during the first week of August. Complete Republican opposition to the bill has meant its only path forward is through the process of budget reconciliation – a means to pass legislation with a simple majority. To clear the Senate and proceed to the House for a vote, the bill will require the support of all 50 Senate Democrats and Vice President Harris’ tie-breaking vote. However, while Senator Manchin has been a major Democratic roadblock to passing similar bills, he hasn’t been the only one, Senator Sinema has also opposed past attempts at climate legislation.
This week’s surprising climate announcement came during another brutal heatwave in the Pacific Northwest and deadly flooding in Kentucky, and on the heels of a record-shattering July heatwave in the United Kingdom. The impacts of the climate disaster are here, they’re happening now, and the US needs to pass this critical legislation now. Sign below to demand Arizona’s Senator, Kyrsten Sinema put people over politics and support this important climate legislation.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Senator Sinema,
Year after year we experience more devastating loss of biodiversity, rising sea levels, and extreme weather because of climate change. Currently, a brutal heatwave is overwhelming the Pacific Northwest as deadly flooding has been tearing through Kentucky – and all of this on the heels of an unprecedented European heatwave that killed up to 1000 people over a three-day period. The impacts of the climate disaster are not far off and theoretical, they are here, and they are happening now.
You must put the health and safety of the people over politics as usual and support the historic climate change legislation making its way through the Senate. If passed, this bill would be the biggest legislative climate action enacted by the US to date. The US must act to mitigate the impacts of climate change and it must do so now. Please vote in favor of this legislation when it reaches the Senate floor.
Sincerely,
