Success: Bipartisan Gun Safety Package Signed Into Law

Target: Senators John Cornyn, Chris Murphy, Thom Tillis, and Kyrsten Sinema

Goal: Support expanded background checks and gun ownership restrictions for individuals who pose threat to public safety.

Gun violence knows no boundaries, as it takes aim at young and old, rich and poor, and rural and urban communities alike. Despite decades of stalled progress on gun safety reform, most voters agree that something has to change. No matter their party affiliation, a majority of people agree on certain measures, such as keeping deadly weapons out of the hands of mentally volatile individuals. Supporters of this ForceChange petition backed such measures. Now, after three decades of inaction, Washington leaders have finally agreed on a path forward for protection.

The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act was signed into law by President Biden, who said of the breakthrough bill, “God willing, it’s going to save a lot of lives.” Included in the new law is a quarter of a billion dollars in funding for crisis intervention programs designed to help individuals in mental crisis while restricting their access to guns via state red flag laws. Enhanced background checks for gun purchasers under the age of 21 (the shooters of both the Buffalo and Uvalde massacres were just 18) will also be deployed.

Perhaps even more significantly, the law closes the so-called Boyfriend Loophole, a long-criticized legal deficiency that did little to limit firearm access for individuals who abused their non-married partners. In addition to addressing this dangerous gap, the act will strengthen penalties and accountability for sellers who help arm individuals convicted of domestic violence with guns. In the United States, a stunning one-quarter of homicides are connected to domestic violence, with a large proportion of these deaths involving firearms.

Sign the petition below to thank the senators involved for putting aside their partisan differences and taking an important step forward for public safety.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senators Cornyn, Murphy, Sinema, and Tillis:

Washington is often viewed as a place irreparably fractured by philosophical differences and political power struggles. Thank you for proving that all hope is not lost. When others retreated to their corners and their talking points, you united with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to help bridge the divide and lessen the gulf.

The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act is a win for democracy and a needed starting point on the vital work of saving and protecting American lives.

Sincerely,
