Don’t Let Evicted Americans End Up on the Streets

Target: Joe Biden, President of the United States

Goal: Extend eviction moratorium and save millions of Americans from homelessness.

An estimated 7.4-million people could have found themselves without a home after a pandemic turned the entire world upside down. To prevent this horrible domino effect, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) implemented an eviction moratorium that helped keep over-burdened renters in their homes. Despite some last-minute scrambling on Capitol Hill and protests by lawmakers, this moratorium recently expired.

As a result, the nearly 7.4 million people who faced insecurity and instability for the past year could be evicted in a month’s time as the pandemic rages on worldwide. A disproportionate number of the millions who do not know if they will have a roof over their heads are minorities, women, and members of low-income households.  The CDC has said it lacked the legal authority to extend the moratorium, and a bid on Congress also failed. Complicating matters, the poorly implemented Emergency Rental Assistance Program still has over 90 percent of available funds in its coffers due to mismanagement and indifference coming from many state governments.

Sign the petition below to urge the executive branch to step in and take action on this crucial issue that will impact countless livelihoods.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Biden,

The leader of the National Low Income Housing Coalition characterized the end of the eviction moratorium as “a devastating failure to act in a moment of crisis.” Public health experts have stressed that a solution to this looming emergency is an “imperative.” Worst of all, in cities and towns across America, almost eight million people –three-quarters of whom are minorities or in low-income brackets—could soon find themselves homeless.

The options and alternatives are gone. Mr. President, you must act now. The fates of families in need will depend on the choices made.

Sincerely,
