Success: Juneteenth Recognized as National Holiday

Target: Sheila Jackson Lee, U.S. Representative

Goal: Thank you for successful effort to commemorate the emancipation of America’s last slaves.

June 19th is one of the most significant days in American history, yet an estimated 60 percent of Americans know little or nothing about the momentous occasion. This ForceChange petition and its supporters called on U.S. leaders to help change that narrative. Now, after over 150 years, Juneteenth is a nationally recognized day of remembrance and a federal holiday.

June 19th,1865 marked the day when the last slaves in Galveston, Texas gained their freedom. Since this moment signaled the official end of slavery, Juneteenth is also known as Emancipation Day, Liberation Day, and Freedom Day. The House of Representatives passed the proposition for a federal holiday by a 400-plus vote margin. The Senate also gave its full support by unanimous consent. On June 17, President Biden officially signed the bill into law, commemorating the occasion as “a day of profound weight and profound power.” Future generations will now truly understand the importance and gravity of this memorable day.

Sign the petition below to commend the Congresswoman who helped make this moment possible.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Representative Jackson Lee,

“We’re here.” You marked the end of “a long journey” with Juneteenth recognition with these simple words that really say everything. After decades, and centuries, of quiet celebrations, America can finally embrace its second Independence Day. Moreover, the citizens of tomorrow will have a fuller and truer understanding of their nation’s legacy.

Thank you for giving voice to this dark period in American history and to the ultimate triumph of freedom and liberty. Keep the good fight going.

Sincerely,
