“I can’t breathe.” These three words and nine minutes of video changed America and the world. The George Floyd case sparked a global movement that raised fundamental questions about race relations and police brutality. The signers of this ForceChange petition joined other voices demanding justice for a man who lost his life on a Minnesota roadside…under the knee of a police officer sworn to serve and protect.
After weeks of wrenching testimony, the jury came to a verdict in the trial of former Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin. The defendant was charged with second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. He was found guilty on each charge. The attorney general leading the case called this moment one of accountability and an important step toward true justice.
