Success: Biggest Drop in Coal Use in 30 Years

Target: His Excellency Charles Michel, President of the European Council

Goal: Praise huge drop in coal-created carbon emissions from the European Union’s electricity sector.

Carbon emissions from the global electricity sector fell two percent in the last year as electricity plants across the globe are phasing out their use of coal, with the EU being one of the major participants. While two percent may not seem like much, it is the biggest drop in electricity-related carbon emissions in 30 years.

Coal is one of the most dangerous fuels in existence, and unfortunately one that particular countries have clung to for far too long. Despite coal usage having been in reduction since 2007, many European countries were still reluctant to let go of it as a fuel for power plants. Petitions such as this one have circulated demanding the country break its ties to the industry.

We still have a long way to go before we are exactly where we need to be in the phasing out of fossil fuels, but every drop in usage and emissions from any sector is a victory. Sign this petition to thank the EU for being a part of this victory.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Your Excellency,

The EU’s divestment from coal firms has brought global electricity-created carbon emissions down two percent, the largest carbon drop in 30 years. While this may seem like a small amount, it is still a huge development given the over-reliance on fossil fuels causing horrendous air pollution over the last several years.

Thank you for dropping your support of coal firms along with several other countries. Every victory and effort counts in this fight for cleaner air, and this step in the right direction is one of the most notable victories. Thank you for this important step in the fight against fossil fuels worldwide.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

It’s a good start but there’s still a long way to go.
