Target: Khalilur Rahman, President of United Nations General Assembly
Goal: Reject bid of UAE diplomat reportedly linked to Sudan war crimes to become secretary-general.
Since 2023, Sudan has been in the grip of a violent power struggle that has displaced nearly 15 million people. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) – of the so-called Government of Peace and Unity — has done absolutely nothing to promote either peace or unity. Instead, the paramilitary group has been accused of carrying out mass atrocities against civilians, including sexual violence, ethnic cleansing, and genocide. Famine and severe malnourishment, especially among the youngest and most vulnerable, are rampant. A United Nations official once described the Darfur region as the “epicenter of human suffering in the world.”
Now comes word that the United Nations may appoint as its new secretary-general a leader who has allegedly aided and abetted the RSF and thus enabled these atrocities. Various nations have inserted themselves into the conflict to serve their own interests, and some have supplied heavy arms and mercenary support to the RSF militia. Chief among these nations is the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which numerous reports have linked to arms smuggling for the militia that has served to prolong this grueling and horrific conflict. The UAE’s Minister of State, Lana Nusseibeh, has reportedly played a major role in perpetuating the blood-stained links between the RSF and the UAE. She has emerged as a leading contender to ascend to the most important position of the world’s most influential international alliance.
Sign the petition below to demand the United Nations veto this controversial choice.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Dr. Rahman,
An estimated 150,000 people have died from violence, starvation, or disease since the beginning of the Sudan civil war…and this number may very well be a conservative estimate, as some bodies have been burned and butchered beyond recognition. Individuals across the world have been impacted, and accusations of war crimes – from chemical warfare to genocide – are being investigated. Against the backdrop and behind the scenes of this carnage are countries like the United Arab Emirates: nations that have by all accounts perpetuated and prolonged the large-scale suffering…all for the seeming sake of gold, or more appropriately termed blood gold, payouts from the militia. Amnesty International has condemned heavy imports of foreign arms that are in direct violation of the Darfur Arms Embargo.
Do not let the likely master puppeteer of the UAE’s unconscionable Sudan interference, Lana Nusseibeh, become the face of the United Nations. This organization is supposed to stand for peace and for our common shared humanity. Let the UN’s leadership reflect these fundamental values.
Sincerely,
[Your Name Here]
