Target: Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services
Goal: Emulate policies that boost communities’ health and well-being.
Several regions of the world – including Ikaria, Greece, Sardinia, Italy, and Okinawa, Japan – have come into the spotlight because of their status as so-called blue zones of wellness. Blue zones are celebrated for the unusual numbers of people in their often-small communities that live past the age of 100. Studies of these places bring forth key factors that might explain the overall health and well-being of these people: physical activity, diets based on plants, and strong social connections.
The Blue Zone Project seeks to foster these positive outcomes across America and the world. In total, over 80 communities and over five million people have participated in the initiative, with promising results. In Monterey County, California, for example, a full two-thirds of the population reports “thriving,” and nearly half claim a drastic reduction in cholesterol levels. The wellness results extend to other participating communities, with impressive reductions in stressors like obesity and smoking being reported overall.
The Blue Zone Project advocates for actionable policies that can help instill these positive habits into communities, including walkable and bikeable neighborhoods, school menu changes, and more civic participation opportunities. Sign the petition below to encourage a broad-scale, nationwide investment in these efforts.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Secretary Kennedy,
Many would argue that the right to a happy and healthy life is among the most fundamental and foundational of human rights. The world’s blue zones have helped fulfill this dream by producing people who not only live unusually long lives but, perhaps more crucially, long and fulfilling lives. Researchers and the people living within these ideal communities credit a healthy, plant-forward diet, physical movement, and social ties for their productive lifestyles.
The Blue Zone Project has provided a solid and proven framework for giving communities the tools to enact their own wellness transformation. The fixes are often simple: more sidewalks, more biking baths, more options for healthier foods, and more community engagement. But these efforts still require time and investment. Please lend your support and commitment to producing more American blue zones that can serve as templates of holistic success.
Sincerely,
