Stop Trump Administration From Allowing Lethal “Cyanide Bombs” on Public Lands

Target: Steve Pearce, Director of the Bureau of Land Management

Goal: Halt the use of M-44 cyanide bombs on public lands to protect wildlife, pets, and public safety.

The alarming decision by the Trump administration to reinstate the use of cyanide bombs, also known as M-44 devices, raises serious concerns about the welfare of wildlife and public safety. These devices inflict a torturous death upon animals that come into contact with them, spraying lethal doses of sodium cyanide that can indiscriminately harm pets, endangered species, and even humans. In 2017, an incident in Idaho involved a 14-year-old boy and his dog, Kasey, who were exposed to one of these devices, leading to the tragic death of the dog and temporary blindness for the boy. Such incidents exemplify the grave risks posed by reinstating these brutal traps.

Humane World for Animals and other advocates have described in shocking detail the operation of the M-44 device, which uses scented bait to lure prey before delivering a deadly pellet of cyanide. This method results in severe suffering, injury, and death for the targeted wildlife, while also potentially affecting non-target species. Environmental groups argue that the recent lifting of the ban is a reckless action that enables additional indiscriminate killings, placing countless innocent animals at risk and betraying the principles of humane wildlife management.

The call for immediate changes to this policy is critical. As the Bureau of Land Management manages vast public lands, protecting both wildlife and community safety must be prioritized. The use of M-44s is not just a matter of predator control; it reflects a disregard for the suffering inflicted upon animals and humans alike. It is necessary to demand that the BLM halt the use of these inhumane devices and search for more ethical alternatives to wildlife management.

PETITION LETTER:

Director Pearce,

The recent decision to allow the use of cyanide bombs on public lands is both alarming and unacceptable, presenting serious risks not only to wildlife but also to pets and public safety. The M-44 devices have a long history of inflicting extreme pain and distress—evident in past incidents where animals and even children have suffered due to accidental exposure. The chilling details of how these devices function highlight the urgent need for reassessment of their use. They are fundamentally inhumane and represent a serious danger to non-target species, including endangered animals and pets.

M-44 traps utilize bait to lure unsuspecting wildlife, leading to a horrific death by cyanide poisoning. This method of killing epitomizes the callousness of predator control practices and is widely condemned by animal rights organizations. The reinstatement of this device by federal authorities raises profound ethical concerns and provokes public outrage, particularly when considering the potential for unintended casualties.

Considering these factors, it is imperative that the Bureau of Land Management retract its permission to use M-44 devices and initiate a more humane approach to wildlife management. Protecting our wildlife and public safety should be the utmost priority. There is no justification for allowing a method as cruel and indiscriminate as cyanide bombs to be employed. Please act now to end this troubling practice for the benefit of all.

Sincerely,
