Hundreds of Dogs and Cats Allegedly Dead as Rescue Goes Wrong

Target: Nathan J. Hochman, District Attorney of Los Angeles County, California

Goal: Prosecute those allegedly responsible for the neglect and deaths of hundreds of dogs and cats found in filthy, overcrowded conditions so severe that rescuers required hazmat gear to enter.

In one of the largest animal rescues in Los Angeles County history, authorities reportedly recovered approximately 250 dogs and 66 cats from a property so filthy that rescue workers were required to wear hazmat protection gear and respirators upon entry. Some animals were reportedly found dead on arrival. Neighbors had apparently complained for years about the stench and constant barking emanating from the rural property, describing the sounds as resembling a violent dogfight. Officials had allegedly been aware of concerns for years but were unable to gain access to inspect — until two confidential witnesses provided audio and video evidence sufficient to obtain a search warrant.

According to authorities, the animals had been in the custody of an animal rescue operator whose property was described by the county’s Animal Care and Control director as an example of a nonprofit rescue that had deteriorated into a hoarding situation. The conditions were reportedly so severe that more than 70 Animal Care and Control workers were deployed, nearby agencies were called in for assistance, and veterinary medical staff were stationed on site to triage animals requiring urgent care. Officials had initially expected to find as many as 700 animals — a figure that itself points to the unchecked scale of the reported neglect. The investigation into alleged animal cruelty, including neglect and overcrowding, was led by the LA County District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigation alongside Animal Care and Control.

Animals allegedly left to languish in fetid, dangerously overcrowded conditions — some dying before rescuers could reach them — represent a profound failure of the duty of care owed to every animal in a rescue’s custody. The existence of years of neighbor complaints, combined with alleged ongoing neglect on a massive scale, demands that those responsible be held fully accountable under the law. Sign below to demand the District Attorney of Los Angeles County ensures criminal charges are filed and vigorously prosecuted against all suspects in this reported crisis of neglect and animal suffering.

PETITION LETTER:

DA Nathan J. Hochman,

We are writing in urgent response to one of the most alarming animal welfare incidents in your county’s history — the rescue of approximately 316 dogs and cats from a property reportedly so filthy that hazmat gear was required to enter, where some animals were reportedly found already dead and hundreds more were allegedly suffering from neglect and overcrowding. According to reports, neighbours had complained about conditions at the property for years, describing the stench and barking as resembling a violent dogfight, yet authorities could not gain access until confidential witnesses provided evidence sufficient for a search warrant.

We are gravely concerned that the alleged neglect in this case was not a sudden crisis but a years-long deterioration that was allegedly allowed to continue unchecked. The scale of what was found — hundreds of animals in reportedly deplorable conditions, some deceased — suggests a prolonged and systematic failure of care. A nonprofit rescue organisation operating under the guise of animal welfare while reportedly subjecting animals to these conditions implies a particularly troubling form of cruelty, one that exploits public trust and endangers the very animals it claims to protect.

We respectfully demand that your office file all appropriate criminal charges against those allegedly responsible for the neglect and deaths of these animals, and that this case be prosecuted with the full seriousness it deserves. Animals who reportedly died in these conditions, and the hundreds more who allegedly suffered, deserve justice — and the public deserves assurance that those who allegedly abuse the mantle of animal rescue will face meaningful legal consequences.

Sincerely,
