Goal: Reject the proposed intensive poultry farming application and prevent large-scale animal suffering and environmental harm.
A proposal has been submitted for an intensive poultry farming operation that would confine and kill approximately one million chickens each year. Animal protection organization PETA has delivered a petition signed by more than 21,000 members of the public urging the local council to reject the plan.
According to campaigners, the proposed development would subject birds to extreme confinement, rapid forced growth, and routine slaughter while also imposing serious environmental and public health risks. Concerns raised include increased heavy vehicle traffic, the generation of vast quantities of manure, and emissions of pollutants such as ammonia that could affect air quality and local ecosystems.
PETA has also warned that intensive animal farming creates conditions that facilitate the spread of infectious diseases and contributes to antimicrobial resistance due to the routine use of antibiotics. The group argues that the proposal would harm not only animals but also the surrounding community and environment.
This petition calls on council leadership to act in the public interest by rejecting the proposal and preventing further expansion of industrial animal confinement.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Councillor Kidd,
We are writing to express serious concern regarding the proposed intensive poultry farming development that would confine and kill approximately one million chickens annually.
More than 21,000 members of the public have signed a petition opposing this proposal due to its severe implications for animal welfare, environmental protection, and community health. Chickens raised in such facilities are routinely subjected to overcrowding, forced growth that causes painful physical collapse, and stressful slaughter processes that have been widely documented by veterinary and animal welfare experts.
Beyond animal suffering, the proposed operation would significantly increase heavy vehicle traffic and generate large volumes of waste and airborne pollutants, including ammonia. Intensive confinement systems also pose well-documented risks of disease emergence and the spread of antimicrobial resistance, endangering both human and animal populations.
We respectfully urge you, as Leader of Shropshire Council, to reject this proposal and demonstrate leadership that prioritizes ethical responsibility, environmental stewardship, and public health.
Sincerely,
[Your Name Here]
