Help Reunite Missing and Abducted Pets With Loved Ones

Target: Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of UK House of Commons

Goal: Use pet detective services as tool for identifying, solving, and prosecuting crimes involving abducted animals.

A woman in the United Kingdom (UK) spent nearly a year searching for her missing dog, with no apparent help from authorities. By the time the woman located her beloved pet, she was reportedly forced to buy back the dog from a puppy farm. Unfortunately, this horror story is not uncommon. Every year in the UK, tens of thousands of pet dogs and cats go missing. Often times, these animals – particularly if they possess a particular pedigree – are stolen and sold to breeding networks. Even in cases where no criminal element is involved, desperate pet parents feel tremendous grief and stress….with no aid in sight.

Increasingly, these individuals are turning to pet detectives. Such professionals specialize in tracking down missing animals, whether the case involves something as simple as luring a missing pet home with the owners’ scent or something as complex as confronting an illegal puppy farm. But since these detectives work in the private sector, their fees – not to mention waitlists — can be out of the reach of many ordinary citizens. These services would be invaluable if incorporated into the UK’s Pet Abduction Act, along with other improvements.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Speaker Hoyle,

Too often, cases related to animals are left out of the law enforcement conversation. The United Kingdom seemed to understand its problem with missing pets, however, leading to the passage of the Pet Abduction Act. While the compulsory microchips introduced in the law have helped, they are not enough. An expansive DNA database has been recommended, which would strengthen the microchip aspect.

Another measure that should be considered is the creation of pet detective units. Private citizens who offer these services boast impressive case clearance rates of up to 90 percent. Many of these successes are achieved in a matter of hours.

Please show you care about the plight of all living beings. Invest in strengthening the Pet Abduction Act and helping thousands of lost pets find their ways home.

Sincerely,
