Success: Death Penalty Abolished for Potentially Wrongfully Convicted Inmate

Target: Gertner Drummond, Oklahoma Attorney General

Goal: Commend elimination of death penalty in case of potentially wrongfully convicted man.

The saga of an Oklahoma man on death row since the 1990s has taken another turn. Richard Glossip was originally sentenced to death for a murder, but proven discrepancies in his trial had led advocates to call for an end to his death sentence. This ForceChange petition outlined the case.

Glossip had averted several execution dates. Due to a lack of sufficient evidence and alleged prosecutorial misconduct, numerous attempts (including by state legislators) were made to get Glossip a new trial. The Supreme Court validated this request in early 2025. The prosecutor for Glossip’s case has announced that when a new trial commences, the death penalty will no longer be on the table. The following pledge was also made by the prosecutor’s office: “my office will make sure Mr. Glossip receives a fair trial based on hard facts, solid evidence and truthful testimony.”

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Attorney General Drummond,

Nine execution dates have come and gone for Richard Glossip, with years of uncertainty and controversy bridging these gaps. You have acknowledged “It is now an undeniable fact that he did not receive a fair trial” and have pledged to “seek the justice that is available today.” Thank you for ensuring a proper trial.

More importantly, thank you for eliminating the capital punishment sentence that could lead to another potential grave miscarriage of justice.

Sincerely,
