The Major Oak of Sherwood Forest in England failed to produce leaves for the first time in 1,000 years, essentially sealing its death sentence. The iconic tree had gained acclaim for its prominent role in the legend of Robin Hood.
The natural home base of the legendary thief and his band of merry men met its untimely end following years of unforgiving hot, dry weather, tourist intrusions, and ill-fated attempts to preserve its structure. But the story doesn’t have to end the same way for this famous tree’s saplings or the many other old growth trees in Sherwood Forest and beyond. Conservationists have urged a comprehensive and committed effort to protect and save woodlands across England.
