Goal: Support permanent ban on most offshore American drilling.
Offshore drilling has devastating long-term ramifications for the climate, for oceans, and for the animals that inhabit them. This ForceChange petition brought attention to the harmful impact on marine dwellers and called for an end to the expansion of U.S. offshore drilling. During his final days in office, President Biden heeded these calls for action and enacted the largest swath of drilling protections in American history.
President Biden banned new oil and gas drilling across 625 million acres of American coast, including the Atlantic coast, the Pacific coast, and large portions of the Gulf of Mexico and the Alaskan coast. The president set no timetable on the bans, so they will be permanent unless the Trump administration succeeds in its efforts to reverse the ban. But the law that was used to institute the ban – the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act – has no provision for undoing such an action, which means officially lifting the ban will face significant legal roadblocks.
