Don’t Let Attempted Insurrection Go Unpunished

Target: Song Chang-jin, Acting Director of South Korea Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials

Goal: Uphold and execute warrants against president accused of insurrection.

South Korea is the latest nation to have its leader under investigation for potential criminal acts. After President Yoon Suk Yeol temporarily declared martial law in an accused executive power grab, he denied repeated legislative requests to answer questions about his actions. Soon thereafter, an impeachment was sought and an arrest warrant was issued for the embattled leader, on the grounds of insurrection. A tense, hours-long standoff (in which the president’s security forces reportedly placed barbed wire around his residence) eventually resulted in a retreat of authorities and no arrest. But the crisis is far from resolved.

Yoon’s security has also apparently prevented the execution of a search warrant against the president. While the president has immunity in most cases, insurrection is a notable exception. In echoes of recent U.S. controversies, supporters argue that a sitting president should not face arrest or legal consequence. Critics, however, firmly believe that no one – especially someone holding the nation’s highest office – should be above the law.

These critics have called on South Korea’s Corruption Investigation Office to remain steadfast in holding President Yoon to account. Sign the petition below to support these efforts to preserve an important Asian democracy.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Song,

Recent polls indicate that nearly two-thirds of South Koreans support the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol. Yoon’s continued resistance to arrest warrants and even to simple questioning signal a flagrant flouting of the democratic process and the will of the people. If this crisis is not resolved in a fair and legal manner, it will further destabilize South Korea and erode trust in its leaders.

Please do everything within your legal means to ensure that President Yoon faces and answers the serious charges against him.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
