End Reported Torture of Kangaroos During Government-Sponsored Culls

Target: Minister for Agriculture Victoria, Hon. Gayle Tierney, Australia

Goal: Implement stricter monitoring and enforcement of kangaroo culling to prevent reported cruelty and ensure humane practices.

A resident of the Yarra Valley, Susan White, has raised serious concerns about the culling of kangaroos in the region. Reports have surfaced of kangaroos being found dead or injured near residential areas, prompting fears that current culling practices may not adequately protect these animals from suffering. Incidents include reports of kangaroos shot with arrows, carcasses left near homes, and animals not being dispatched humanely.

While the Victorian Government regulates commercial kangaroo harvesting with guidelines intended to ensure humane treatment, there are calls for more active monitoring and enforcement. Ms. White suggests that representatives from the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) should be present during culling operations to ensure compliance with animal welfare standards.

Kangaroos are a cherished part of Australia’s natural heritage, and their well-being is of great importance to many residents. Ensuring that culling, when necessary, is conducted humanely and responsibly is essential to uphold ethical standards and public trust. Help prevent unnecessary suffering and protect the welfare of kangaroos.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Minister Tierney,

I am writing to express deep concern over reports of potential animal cruelty in kangaroo culling practices within the Yarra Valley. Incidents have been reported of kangaroos found dead or injured near residential areas, including cases where animals were apparently shot with arrows or left suffering due to improper culling methods.

While I understand that kangaroo population management is a complex issue, it is crucial that all culling activities adhere strictly to humane and ethical standards. The current reports suggest that more active monitoring and enforcement may be necessary to ensure compliance with the National Code of Practice for the Humane Shooting of Kangaroos and Wallabies.

I urge you to implement stricter oversight of kangaroo culling operations, including increased presence of DEECA staff during these activities. By ensuring that only properly trained and vetted individuals are granted permits, and by actively monitoring their actions, we can help prevent unnecessary suffering and protect these iconic native animals.

Please consider taking immediate action to address these concerns and to enhance the welfare protections for kangaroos in Victoria. Your leadership in this matter is essential to uphold the ethical standards that our community expects and to preserve the integrity of wildlife management practices.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
