Prioritize End of Plastic Pollution

Target: Jyoti Mathur-Filipp, Executive Secretary of Intergovernmental Negotiating Treaty on Plastic Pollution

Goal: Make excessive plastic production and interference of special interests key issues in negotiation of global plastic treaty.

A report recently revealed the lengths the plastics industry will go to in order to ensure its environmentally destructive prominence continues. The industry has apparently known for decades that recycling plastics is neither feasible nor effective. Yet they continue to plaster many of their products with “recyclable” designations and to promote their products as supposedly “multi-use.”

All the while, fossil fuel special interests that are losing ground in more traditional output are increasingly focusing their production on plastics, while touting “chemical recycling” that likewise has no long-term benefit. And the world suffers as a result. Since 2022, United Nations (UN) members have been negotiating a global plastic treaty. But countries heavily reliant on fossil fuels – as well as ever-present lobbyists – are standing in the way of a strong resolution.

Sign the petition below to urge more expedience in delivering on this years-long promise.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Executive Secretary Mathur-Filipp,

While meaningful progress was touted after the most recent Intergovernmental Negotiating Treaty on Plastic Pollution session, advocates expressed concern over the announcement that global production cuts would not be a priority in preparing for the next session. The hope for a strong and binding treaty within a year cannot be realized in the absence of this central issue. Scientists already estimate that without proactive intervention, plastic production may triple within a short time.

Special interests, as they have done for so long, cannot dictate this discussion. Please follow the lead of other similar committees and neutralize the presence of these entities during discussions. And perhaps more consequentially, put the single-most important facet of this crisis – rampant plastic production – back on the table.

Sincerely,

  1. Plastics is the end material of Big Oil. Did you expect anything ethical or decent from Big Oil? Oil and plastics are ruing the planet and we have jerks for politicians who take money from, these companies under the table. If caught the politicians need to be fired immediately. This Dark Money crap is ruining governments. Humans are greedy and selfish, and will kill their mothers for any amount of money. There is no honor among thieves.
