Don’t Subject Animals to Terrifying Airlifts

Target: Ueli Kihm, President of the Swiss Veterinary Association

Goal: Ensure the safety and well-being of animals during airlifts.

In a recent event that has captured the attention of millions worldwide, a domestic cow in Switzerland reportedly experienced an unconventional journey to a vet, being airlifted across mountains and forests. This incident, while showcasing the lengths to which rescuers will go for animal care, has also ignited a debate on the appropriateness and safety of such measures. With over 29 million views, the footage reportedly reveals the cow, albeit securely harnessed, being transported through the air, an experience that has raised questions about the psychological impact on the animal.

Critics and concerned citizens alike have voiced apprehensions regarding the potential distress and fear experienced by the cow during this aerial voyage. While the intent was undoubtedly for the animal’s benefit, the method employed has led to a polarized discussion on animal welfare standards. The incident highlights a gap in our understanding and consideration of the emotional and physical well-being of animals in such scenarios.

Call for the establishment of clear, stringent guidelines and protocols for the transportation of animals, especially in cases requiring such extraordinary measures. It is paramount that animal welfare remains at the forefront of veterinary practices, including the consideration of the psychological effects of transportation methods. Demand the Swiss Veterinary Association to lead by example, ensuring that all animals receive care that is not only physically safe but also mentally considerate.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Ueli Kihm,

The recent viral incident of a cow being airlifted in Switzerland for a veterinary visit has sparked widespread discussion and concern regarding animal welfare during such transports. While the intention behind the airlift—to provide necessary medical attention—is commendable, the method has raised significant questions about the assumed psychological and physical impact on the animal involved. This event, watched by millions, not only brought to light the innovative approaches to animal care but also underscored the urgent need for comprehensive guidelines that prioritize animal welfare in extraordinary transportation situations.

We understand the complexities involved in providing care to animals in difficult-to-access areas. However, this incident highlights a broader issue—the need for protocols that ensure the safety and well-being of animals, taking into account their emotional and psychological health. The mixed reactions from the public, ranging from amusement to concern, reflect a growing awareness and sensitivity towards the experiences of animals under human care. We must address these concerns by establishing clear, compassionate, and science-based guidelines for animal transportation, especially in scenarios requiring unconventional methods such as airlifts.

In light of this, we respectfully demand the development and implementation of stringent safety protocols for the aerial transportation of animals. These guidelines should not only ensure physical safety but also consider the psychological well-being of the animals involved, thereby setting a standard for animal care practices that is both humane and respectful of the animals’ experiences. Let us lead the way in promoting animal welfare that truly reflects our society’s values of compassion and empathy.

Sincerely,

  1. While I understand it could be terrifying for the animal, I do not know the circumstances. Was it necessary to save the animal’s life? There is not enough information here to entice me to sign. On the one hand, I applaud the fact that the owner would go to any means necessary to get help for the cow. On the other hand, I don’t know if the cow was in serious enough distress to warrant being airlifted, which I will grant could cause additional distress. So, until I have all the facts, I will withhold my signature.
