Success: Several Species Saved From the Brink of Extinction

Target: Grethel Aguilar, Director General of the International Union for Conservation of Nature

Goal: Praise the revival of several formerly almost-extinct species.

Ten species have made a comeback from the brink of extinction in the wild thanks to captive breeding programs. Among them are the flightless Guam rail and Australia trout cod; the rail had previously been declared extinct, and the fish has gone from critically endangered to vulnerable.

This is a huge step forward in the global fight to preserve as much wildlife as possible, as well as an example of captive breeding used for a noble purpose. Birds and fish have been especially vulnerable to possible extinction due to hunters, habitat loss, predators, and other factors disrupting their feeding, mating, and migration patterns. Petitions such as this one have circulated demanding a return of the Guam rail.

It is hoped that with strong enough protection, these species will see a spike in population over the next several years, if not sooner. Sign this petition to thank the International Union for Conservation of Nature for their efforts in preserving these animals.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director General Aguilar,

Several Guam rails have been returned to the wild and the Australian trout cod population has boomed, making your captive breeding programs a success. While still endangered, the Guam rails’ return to the wild gives us hope that their population will fully recover over the next several years, if not sooner. Your efforts to revive many extinct or near-extinct species have borne fruit.

This is an incredible step forward in the global effort to preserve wildlife, with the Guam rail and trout cod being just two of many species saved by captive breeding used for a noble purpose. In the wake of so many animals threatened by predators, climate change, and ecosystem disruption, it is wonderful to see even one extinction reversed. Thank you for your efforts in bringing back the Guam rail.

Sincerely,
