Success: Woodland Wildlife Finally Protected

Target: The Honourable Sussan Ley, Environment Minister of Australia

Goal: Praise Australian environment minister for granting woodland wildlife and plants long-needed protection.

Environment minister Sussan Ley has added a large amount of plant and wildlife species to the critically endangered list, ensuring that they will receive the legal protection they sorely need. Among these species are the Baw Baw frog, the white-bellied frog, the yellow-spotted tree frog and the Kuranda tree Frog; three specific woodlands will also be protected.

Australia’s wildlife protection laws have been riddled with flaws for years, leading to many extinctions and near-extinctions. Iconic species such as the koala bear and the black-flanked rock-wallaby, plus a variety of birds like the eastern curlew, have been declining steadily over a number of years due to habitat loss and pollution. Petitions such as this one have demanded past environment ministers protect these animals.

Ley is the first environment minister in years to respond to these demands, and it is hoped that the extra protection will help these beloved animals regain a stable population. Sign this petition to thank Ley for finally taking this important step.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Minister Ley,

Thank you for upgrading thousands of species of wildlife and acres of woodland to critically endangered, ensuring they will be given the protection they sorely need. Australia’s record of wildlife endangerment and extinction is staggering, with many iconic animals declining due to habitat loss and other factors, and past environment ministers have delayed or outright neglected giving them legal protection.

You have taken a very important step in helping Australia’s natural world recover. Wildlife and woodlands are vital to the continent’s well-being, and it is hoped that with these new legal protections in place, species on the brink of complete disappearance will replenish their populations quickly.

Sincerely,
