Success: UK Government to Back Plastic Waste Reduction

Target: Robert Jenrick, Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury of the United Kingdom

Goal: Praise United Kingdom government for supporting public demand for less plastic pollution.

Overwhelming public demand for less plastic waste in the UK has been met with approval from the government. Treasury Secretary Robert Jenrick stated during a visit to a cleanup project that the government not only intends to make plastic reduction a priority, but to use the tax system as a tool for this effort. One focal point of this mission is for restaurants and coffee shops to begin using biodegradable cups and takeout containers.

Reduction in plastic waste has been a global concern for the past several years due to its detrimental effects on wildlife, humanity, and the ocean. Countless articles and petitions such as this one on ForceChange have been circulated to make the public aware of such problems, particularly in the UK, where many kinds of pollution are making life difficult for the people as well as the wildlife.

The UK government’s decision to heed the public’s demand is most welcome, the first and most important step in improving environmental conditions across the territory. Sign this petition to thank Secretary Jenrick for announcing this step.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Jenrick,

Your decision to heed public outcry for less plastic waste is highly appreciated and most welcome. Plastic pollution is one of the chief sources of danger for humans and wildlife alike; it harms the oceans, contaminates soil and water, and has led to the deaths of many species of sea creatures and seabirds. The amount of non-recyclable plastic used each year is unacceptable, and it is about time a major change was made.

Thank you for listening to the public and agreeing to make this change. It may be only one step, but it a large and important one that will improve environmental conditions all over the UK. Additionally, it is likely to encourage similar changes across the continent and hopefully the globe.

Sincerely,
