Goal: Direct presidential focus toward resolving Americans’ problems rather than renaming places and building costly structures.
The Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts, the Donald J. Trump U.S. Institute of Peace, the Donald J. Trump International Airport, the Trump Strait, Trump Station, and Trump Train: these are just a few of the longstanding and historic landmarks that have been rebranded or are under rebrand proposals to glorify the president of the United States. Ironically, the president has previously championed closing some of these institutions, like the Kennedy Center and the Institute of Peace. His image and name have also found their way — or may soon find their way — onto gold coins, bank accounts, pharmaceutical portals, national park passes, the 100-dollar bill, and even Mount Rushmore.
One of the more audacious proposals would involve affixing the president’s name to Ford’s Theatre: a historic and somber landmark that carries the notorious distinction of being the site of President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. In addition, the president has floated renaming lakes, gulfs, states, and oceans. These pet projects seemingly occupy a sizeable chunk of the leader of the free world’s spare time. He has spent multiple hours of his days going over plans for his extravagant ballroom and arch, despite public protests, clashes with designers who apparently raised serious safety concerns, and pleas from military families to abandon projects that intrude on sacred ceremonies and grounds.

Dear Ms. Wiles,
How many hours of this administration’s time have been devoted to needless name changes, rebrands, and equally needless and costly vanity projects? A president’s legacy is defined by much more than how many buildings and structures can bear his likeness or his name. And security protocols cannot be used as a blanket excuse to plow ahead with expensive endeavors condemned by military families who want their privacy and their loved ones’ final resting places respected, by experts whose raised concerns about the security of these structures are summarily dismissed and disregarded, and by taxpayers who are footing the bill.
At the halfway point of this administration, take stock of where your priorities should lie. Compel the president to stop with the distractions and the bluster and to get back to the serious business of leading the nation.
