Target: Mike Johnson, Speaker of the House
Goal: Do not delay votes on consequential topics like military leadership and sex trafficking accountability.
While Americans prepare to vote for the people who are supposed to represent them, elected representatives are busy doing anything but their jobs. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson abruptly called yet another recess, cancelling weeks of legislative action that was scheduled to take place. In a month’s time, Congress only convened for six days of work. Likely not coincidentally, the people’s representatives will not return to the massive work before them until after the election.
Also unlikely a coincidence, the cancellation lets elected representatives off the hook for voting on a couple of high-profile measures. As the House of Representatives inched ever closer to the required 200-plus signatures to compel full release of the Epstein files, the speaker decided an early vacation was imperative. Likewise, the speaker seemingly thought it wise to delay a vote on articles of impeachment – articles brought by a member of the speaker’s own party – against the controversial Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth. While the secretary has made news recently due to his odd fixation on testosterone injections for troops, on his unexplained firings and targeting of top-level and distinguished military leaders, and on the living conditions active-duty Navy personnel are enduring, the articles of impeachment concern matters of literal life and death. Amongst the eight articles of impeachment are allegations about his mishandling of the Iran conflict, lethal boat strikes ordered on Venezuelan citizens, and an overall violation of the secretary’s “oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
These matters –and so many more – demand Congress’ immediate attention. Sign the petition below to call on leaders to do the jobs that their constituents elected them to do.

Dear Speaker Johnson,
The House of Representatives is supposed to be the House of the People, so why is the People’s House sitting empty when the people need it most? How should voters expect all of those campaign promises to be fulfilled when Congress cannot be bothered to stay in session long enough for any meaningful action? Another recess – and another vacation on the people’s dime – is unacceptable. Elected representatives cannot pull up stakes and hide every time an uncomfortable vote comes their way. Impeachment is a serious and urgent matter. Justice for victims of sex trafficking is a serious and urgent matter. And the livelihoods of millions of Americans in economic limbo is most certainly a serious and urgent matter that your constituents entrusted you to resolve.
Cancel the recess – not the work – and get back to doing the work of the people.
