The cruel separation of animals from their families is a standard practice in animal agriculture that causes incomprehensible suffering. Mother pigs are confined in gestation crates while pregnant and later moved to even smaller farrowing crates, where they are unable to care for or even touch their newborn piglets, leaving the young animals exposed to significant stress and trauma. Similarly, calves are taken away from their mothers shortly after birth to be sent to feedlots for fattening, causing immense pain not just to the young but also to grieving mothers.
The practices extend to the dairy and egg industries, where mothers endure separation from their newborns for financial gain. Calves on dairy farms are taken from their mothers within hours of birth, leaving the mothers to mourn and the calves to cry to an extent that is reportedly so severe it can cause raw throats. In hatcheries, mother hens have their unhatched eggs taken away, and male chicks are killed at birth, all in the name of profit. Such practices illustrate a disturbing disregard for animal welfare and family bonds among these sentient beings, leading to chronic stress and suffering.
Demanding an end to family separation practices in animal agriculture is essential for the ethical treatment of animals and for fostering a humane food system. The acknowledgment of their emotional bonds is necessary to prevent unmeasurable pain suffered by these creatures. To instigate meaningful change and end this cruelty, it is imperative that the Secretary of Agriculture takes action to prohibit the separation of animals from their families in all areas of animal agriculture.
