Target: John Boozman, Chair of U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs
Goal: Support needed reforms to improve healthcare and social services for military veterans.
While current military emphasis seems to be on building more and fancier weapons and machines, the real soul of American military might – the men and women who serve and sacrifice – too often gets left behind and cast aside. As America celebrates the sacrifices of military service members, the People’s House – in a rare bipartisan move – showed its support for living veterans by infusing half a trillion dollars into the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). When the legislation that covers both military building projects and healthcare benefits moves to the Senate, the opportunity exists for reforms that could improve the lives and the well-being of veterans across the country.
For one, more healthcare investments could go toward direct funding of the VA rather than funding for third-party private institutions. Statistics consistently point out the better outcomes for veterans who receive direct VA care. And the attempted defunding and deemphasis of care for veterans who suffered toxic exposure should end, and the recommended advisory committee on toxic exposure should be implemented. In addition, recommended aid for veterans enduring homelessness or lacking dental care could benefit from strong support. And enhancements for outdated infrastructure, coordination systems, and technology – especially in more rural areas – could provide the kind of long-term gains that will stabilize the entire VA apparatus.

PETITION LETTER:
Dear Senator Boozman,
Senate backlash about a proposed Department of Justice slush fund that could be earmarked for individuals convicted of assaulting police officers is a promising sign that Congress still values the men and women who have served and sacrificed for this country. The sweeping VA package that just received robust support in the House of Representatives is another opportunity to demonstrate this commitment. The nearly two dozen bills that are woven throughout the package span across every aspect of VA improvements, from workforce protections to expanded healthcare coverage to essential construction upgrades and housing assistance.
Please show the same united support for these reforms as demonstrated in the House. Moreover, consider important additions such as enhanced investments for direct VA healthcare coverage. Mark the time of year when Americans set aside their differences and honor the fallen by doing the same and honoring America’s living heroes in the most impactful way possible.
Sincerely,
