Target: Lynette Howell Taylor, President of Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
Goal: Support safeguards against unfair and illegal use of artificial intelligence in arts and entertainment.
Social media giant Meta is facing a fresh lawsuit claiming it pirated human-made works to “train” its AI systems. According to the copyright infringement accusations made by five major publishers, Meta fed written materials ranging from novels to textbooks to articles into the systems so that the AI could better emulate human language. Creative professionals, much like employees in many other sectors, worry that they will be replaced by systems that are only made possible through potentially unlawful – and unpaid – exploitation of their own efforts. This ForceChange petition highlighted some of the concerns about the rapid advance of AI in society. Some powerful organizations are beginning to listen and take action.
Music downloading site Spotify recently announced new regulations intended to protect artists from unwanted AI impersonators. In addition, the company unveiled a system designed to shield consumers from making unwitting AI purchases via a verification system that validates to listeners that an artist is human. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences followed suit with an unequivocable amendment to its Oscar/Academy Award eligibility guidelines. Only screenplays and acting performances made by human beings can win the industry’s highest honors.
Sign the petition below to thank the Academy for ensuring human creativity and achievement remain top priority.
