Stop Raiding Pantries and Piggy Banks to Fatten Wallets of the Rich

Target: GT Thompson, Chair of House Committee on Agriculture

Goal: Do not slash benefits that help feed millions of poor and hungry families.

In America, 14 percent of the population is food insecure, with children suffering the worst and most lingering health effects of this hunger. As food prices continue on an upward trend, malnourishment worsens. Yet a program that helps 12 million Americans stave off hunger may be slashed up to 20 percent…while the “saved” funds go directly into the coffers of the wealthiest Americans.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), more commonly known as food stamps. could lose tens of billions of dollars in an effort to fund tax cuts largely benefitting high-income individuals. Significant gutting of the foundation of SNAP, the Thrifty Food Plan, could negatively impact roughly one in five children. And food banks would be ill-equipped to fulfill the demand that would result if SNAP benefits are stripped away. As it stands, many families already go without due to social stigmas associated with food stamps and welfare. Elected leaders may very well compound this crisis.

Sign the petition below to demand politicians stop robbing from the poor to give to the rich.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Congressman Thompson,

You recently vowed that the House would not pass SNAP cuts in budget reconciliation, but words and actions from this chamber of Congress signal otherwise. Perhaps you need a reminder of who stands to lose from gutting a program that combats hunger: over 12 million Americans, and 20 percent of children in this country. Malnourished children face obstacles that could haunt them for the rest of their lives, from developmental delays to health ailments typically found in individuals four times their ages.

Do you want to sentence kids – and your own constituents – to this fate for a short-term financial boost or for a few cheap political points? Do not let this be your legacy. Say no to SNAP cuts.

Sincerely,
