Target: Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, President of Mozambique
Goal: Bring peaceful resolution to protests following presidential election.
Violence is once again surrounding the aftermath of a presidential election. Since the decades-long Mozambique ruling party FRELICO was once again elected to power in the fall, opposition parties have coordinated large-scale protests. While many of these protests have been peaceful, the leadership’s reaction to them unfortunately has proven far less than peaceful.
Security forces have been accused of using live bullets, resulting in the deaths of protesters, of police, and of innocent bystanders. Since the protests began, over 100 people have been killed, including an estimated ten children. The opposition has called for continued protests in the weeks leading up to the presidential inauguration, which threatens to unleash even more violence.
Mediators from around the world have called for an end to the violence and an investigation into the allegations of political corruption prior to and during the election. Sign the petition below to urge Mozambique’s current leadership to listen to these calls for the sake of the nation’s stability and the safety of its people.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear President Nyusi,
Months of protests have disrupted the lives of citizens and, in too many tragic cases, ended their lives. Before new leadership can be established, peaceful stability must be found. Serious allegations have emerged regarding both the country’s election process and the excessive deadly force used against protesters and bystanders alike. Children have lost their lives.
Please do everything in your power to address these allegations and demonstrate to the people that their voices are being heard. Most of all, ensure that these voices will not be silenced through violence and oppression.
Sincerely,
[Your Name Here]
