Target: John Bell, Chair of North Carolina House Select Committee on Helene Recovery
Goal: Make immediate investment in hurricane recovery efforts affecting agriculture sector.
Hurricane Helene left a swath of destruction in its wake. North Carolina’s agriculture industry, which the state relies on for sustenance, is still reeling from the effects. Topsoil and crops were lost, entire fields became overrun with abundant sand and sediment that still remains, and equipment was destroyed.
Expected global inflation on agricultural products due to climate effects in the coming months will only compound the suffering. Farmers are calling on state lawmakers to make significant investments of aid. But a select committee on disaster aid will meet only for the first time in the coming weeks. And no aid approval is expected before year’s end.
Sign the petition below to demand these supposed leaders take action that will actually help the constituents who elected them.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Representative Bell,
An estimate 20 percent of farms could become non-operational by the end of next year. North Carolina could make up a significant percentage of these failures due to the catastrophic effects of Hurricane Helene. And experts forecast that agricultural prices will rise significantly in the coming year as the climate crisis renders more land unfarmable.
North Carolina’s leaders have not been acting with the urgency these developments demand. A select committee centered around hurricane relief has accomplished nothing and has not even completed a meeting. And the investments desperately needed in aid are being treated as a can to be kicked down the road. Meanwhile, North Carolinians stand to lose access to vital food, and the industry on which they depend stands on the brink of collapse.
Do better for your constituents. Make hurricane relief and agricultural assistance a top priority.
Sincerely,
[Your Name Here]
