Target: Javier Gerardo Milei, President of Argentina
Goal: Stop environmental atrocities like the mass killing of a penguin colony by refocusing on ecological issues within government ranks.
Nearly 200 penguin nests and over 100 penguin chicks were destroyed near an Argentinian farm. The man in charge of the farm, Ricardo La Regina, was found guilty of animal cruelty and aggravated environmental harm in the case. He received a three-year prison sentence.
La Regina drove a digger right in the midst of a penguin colony, causing the destruction. He claimed that he was compelled to take the action because repeated appeals to the local government to build an access road to his property were denied. Factors such as climate change and oil drilling have already had a significant impact on these penguin populations, so more clearly needs to be done in order to prevent the interests of local human populations and these important fixtures of the ecosystem from coming into conflict.
Sign the petition below to demand more involvement from government officials who have seemingly turned away from crucial environmental issues.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear President Milei,
The verdict in the trial of farmer Ricardo La Regina was hailed as a landmark moment for environmental justice. La Regina was sentenced to three years in prison for driving his digger through a penguin colony, resulting in mass casualties of the animals. La Regina places the blame on Argentinian government officials who reportedly never acted on his requests for an access road to his farm property.
These penguins are facing enough existential threats, from climate change to drilling. Their plight demonstrates the vital importance of an environmental-focused ministry. The dissolution of the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development may very well lead to similar consequences in the future. Help prevent drastic actions from desperate people and ensure that a similar tragedy does not occur again. Restore environmental justice into Argentina’s government.
Sincerely,
