Address Surging Animal Homelessness Crisis

**Target:** Prosecutor General of Romania

**Goal:** Ensure rigorous legal action against those allegedly responsible for the severe mistreatment and suffering of homeless animals in Romania.

Romania is facing a heartbreaking crisis with an estimated 600,000 homeless dogs and thousands of cats struggling to survive on the streets. These animals are subjected to terrifying conditions, including vulnerability to harsh weather, attacks from other animals, neglect, and cruelty from humans. Disturbingly, many animals are suffering from severe health issues due to untreated infestations, life-threatening infections, and injury, highlighting an urgent need for accountability and action against those purportedly causing harm.

Recent accounts documented by PETA Germany’s partner, Eduxanima, have drawn attention to numerous cases of alleged animal cruelty. For instance, a kitten was reportedly found in the garbage, suffering from a severe eye condition, while a dog reportedly endured life-threatening conditions due to an ingrown collar. Moreover, the numerous rescues in rural areas such as Corbu underscore the dire need for interventions to prevent unnecessary suffering and promote animal welfare. These stories are just a few examples of the alleged systemic failures in protecting animals and require decisive legal action against those perpetuating these heinous acts.

It is imperative that robust measures are enforced to hold accountable those allegedly contributing to this ongoing crisis of animal cruelty. This petition demands decisive legal action that not only addresses the alleged acts of cruelty but also promotes the implementation of stronger laws and protections for the countless suffering animals across Romania.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Prosecutor General,

This petition is prompted by the alarming situation of homeless animals in Romania, where an estimated 600,000 dogs and thousands of cats are suffering from severe neglect and brutality. Many of these animals face the threat of traffic, harmful encounters with other animals or humans, and the perils of extreme weather conditions. Disturbingly, recent rescue initiatives have revealed appalling cases of neglect and abuse, including a kitten abandoned in the garbage and a dog found with a painfully ingrown collar.

The situation is dire, as countless animals remain vulnerable and at risk. Reports highlight cases where animals were treated without basic medical care, suffering immense pain and distress. For instance, the troubling treatment of animals on the streets of rural areas such as Corbu and Bălilești exemplifies the urgent need for protective legal measures. It is critical to hold accountable those purportedly responsible for these acts of cruelty and to ensure that similar instances do not continue unpunished.

We urge you to take immediate action in investigating these incidents and to implement appropriate legal measures against those reportedly responsible. Stronger protections and enforcement of animal welfare laws in Romania are essential to alleviate the suffering of these vulnerable beings. Together, we can make a difference for the animals who cannot advocate for themselves.

Sincerely,
