Rising Reports of Dog Cruelty Demand Urgent Action

Target: Mair Eluned Morgan, First Minister of Wales

Goal: Curb the recent, alarming surge in dog cruelty cases.

A worrying trend has emerged in Wales, where the RSPCA has reported a consistent increase in dog cruelty cases for three consecutive years. In 2023, 3,876 dog cruelty cases were reported, up significantly from 2,911 cases in 2020. Over the three years from 2020 to 2023, there have been a total of 13,337 reports, highlighting a severe and growing problem.

The counties with the highest number of reported cases in 2023 were Rhondda Cynon Taff with 351, Swansea with 325, and Cardiff with 307. These alarming statistics underline the need for immediate action to protect dogs and address the cruelty they are facing. The RSPCA’s No Animal Deserves Cruelty summer appeal aims to raise awareness and funds to combat this disturbing rise in animal cruelty.

Chris Sherwood, chief executive of the RSPCA, has emphasized the heartbreaking nature of these statistics and the urgent need to stand against this cruelty. The increase in dog cruelty cases suggests a troubling trend that must be addressed to ensure the safety and well-being of these animals.

The recent case in Newport, where three newborn puppies were found dead in a shoebox, is just one example of the cruelty dogs are subjected to. Call for stronger enforcement of animal welfare laws.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Minister Morgan,

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the rising cases of dog cruelty in Wales, as highlighted by recent data from the RSPCA. The increase in reports over the past three years is alarming and indicates a growing problem that requires immediate attention and action.

In 2023 alone, there were 3,876 reported cases of dog cruelty, a significant increase from previous years. This trend is deeply troubling and underscores the need for stronger enforcement of animal welfare laws and increased public awareness to prevent such acts of cruelty.

I urge you to take immediate action to address this crisis by enforcing stricter animal welfare laws and launching comprehensive awareness campaigns. It is crucial that we work together to create a kinder world for animals and ensure that all dogs are protected from harm and cruelty.

Your leadership in this matter is essential to safeguarding the welfare of dogs in Wales and upholding the principles of compassion and justice in our society. By taking decisive action, we can help prevent further cruelty and ensure that every dog receives the care and kindness they deserve.

Sincerely,
