Nurse Patient Care Back to Health

Target: Sir Jim Harra, Chief Executive for HM Revenue & Customs

Goal: Boost pay and morale for nurses experiencing crippling burnout.

Tens of thousands of nurses are reportedly leaving the profession in the United Kingdom (UK) every year. This deficiency seriously compromises patient care. Moreover, it hurts healthcare recruitment in a region where at least one in ten nursing posts apparently remains unfilled.

Nurses cite many factors in their displeasure. The shortage has created burnout in working nurses, as they take on increased workloads in high-stress environments. Some of these stressors include widespread harassment and abuse that is allegedly taking place within the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). Roughly one-quarter of employees have reported bullying and other forms of intimidation. These circumstances are causing vital healthcare workers to feel underappreciated: feelings that are compounded by an apparent lack of will to implement pay raises or even enforce minimum wage standards.

Sign the petition below to call for a better pay model that can boost recruitment and help foster strong standards of quality patient care.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Sir Harra,

The NHS has experienced an estimated shortage of over 50,000 nurses and midwives. Reports indicate that without action the overall healthcare provider shortage could grow to a million within the next decade. Patients are paying the ultimate price.

Claims have been made that serious recruitment efforts are underway, but these efforts will fail in the absence of a demonstrable show of appreciation for the work these public servants perform every day. Advocates have called on HM Revenue & Customs to begin showing this appreciation through action as well as words. A disturbing report revealed that as many as 17,000 health care workers were paid below the minimum wage standard.

Rectify this tremendous grievance and work for a stronger pay system that will empower nurses and uplift UK health care.

Sincerely,
