Target: Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of United Nations
Goal: Condemn raid on Mexican embassy that potentially violated Vienna Convention law.
A major violation of the diplomatic relations that help keep world order stabilized allegedly took place in Ecuador. Police reportedly raided a Mexican embassy and forcefully removed a former politician who had been granted political asylum. During the raid, diplomats were allegedly injured and threatened with guns.
The raid provoked widespread outrage across Latin America and beyond. Both the United States and the European Union also condemned the actions, citing the need to respect the Vienna Convention, which sets a standard for peace treaties among countries. Several nations, including Mexico, severed diplomatic ties with Ecuador.
Mexico wants further action, however, and has called on the United Nations (UN) to reprimand Ecuador. Sign the petition below to urge the UN to investigate this reported breach of international norms.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Director-General Guterres,
The Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties laid an important foundation for a planet shaken by two world wars. Upholding and preserving this foundation are of paramount importance for ensuring humanity never faces another cataclysmic conflict. Ecuador’s raid of its Mexican embassy may seem at first glance to be a minor disagreement between two tenuously connected nations. Yet the reported flouting of diplomatic relations brought forth by the incident speaks to a much deeper and more consequential problem.
If nations feel free to violate and dismiss these rules of law reached by consensus, then the world will find itself sliding toward another inevitable and tragic outcome. Take the necessary action on this incident and, in the process, help prevent the slow erosion of international order.
Sincerely,
