Shut Down Cruel, Overcrowded Puppy Mills

Target: Andrew Bailey, Missouri State Attorney General

Goal: Prevent overcrowded and neglectful conditions in puppy mills.

Nearly two dozen dogs were recently rescued and transported to Massachusetts, having endured what is described as overcrowded and neglectful conditions in Missouri’s puppy mills. These dogs, including breeds such as cocker spaniels and Havaneses, were reportedly over-bred and lacked proper medical care, hinting at a grave injustice not only to the animals involved but also to the ethical standards we strive for in pet care and animal welfare.

The facilities, criticized for their allegedly inadequate space and medical neglect, have brought to light the urgent need for legislative reform. The dogs, aged between one and ten years, are now receiving medical checks before adoption. Their arrival underscores the pressing issue of commercially bred pets and the environments from which they come, which often lead to severe health and behavioral problems.

It is crucial that we address these issues at their root by advocating for a statewide ban on the sale of commercially bred dogs, cats, and rabbits in pet shops, following Boston and Cambridge’s example. Such legislative action would not only improve the lives of countless animals but also encourage adoption from shelters and rescue organizations, promoting a more humane and responsible approach to pet ownership. Take action now.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Attorney General Andrew Bailey,

We urge your office to take a firm stance against the alleged overcrowded and neglectful conditions found in many puppy mills across Missouri, as recently evidenced by the rescue of nearly two dozen dogs now under the care of MSPCA-Angell in Massachusetts. These dogs were allegedly subjected to over-breeding and a lack of essential medical attention, highlighting a significant breach in animal welfare and ethical treatment standards.

The state of Missouri must lead by example by implementing and enforcing stringent regulations that prevent such inhumane treatment of animals. The conditions described not only compromise animal health and welfare but also reflect poorly on our societal values regarding animal care. By adopting stricter regulatory measures, Missouri can ensure that all breeding facilities operate humanely and justly, providing necessary space, medical care, and socialization opportunities for all animals.

In light of these pressing issues, we demand immediate action to develop and enforce comprehensive legislation prohibiting puppy mills’ operation under the conditions allegedly found in the recent rescue. We must align our state’s practices with those of ethical treatment and care, reflecting our commitment to animal welfare and ethical responsibility.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
