Hit the Brakes on Gas Station Development

Target: Gavin Newsom, Governor of California

Goal: Support accelerated transition away from fossil fuel infrastructure like gas stations.

Sacramento has become the first major city in the nation to put its money where its mouth is regarding the phasing out of one key form of fossil fuel infrastructure. California’s capital has introduced a policy that states the following: “the city shall prohibit the establishment of new gas stations or the expansion of new fossil fuel infrastructure at existing gas stations unless the project proponent provides 50kW or greater direct current fast charger electric-vehicle charging stations on site at a ratio of at least one new charging station per one new gas fuel nozzle.” In other words, Sacramento is committing to building and investing in the clean energy transportation infrastructure of the future while divesting itself of harmful fossil fuels.

Sacramento joins several other smaller California towns that have passed similar measures, beginning with Sonoma County’s Petaluma. More impressive still, this momentous push arose from the efforts of area teenagers who have increasingly endured devastating disasters such as the 2018 Paradise wildfires. They also understand the consequences of leaking underground tanks that poison their water and the ground they walk on. These young activists are holding leaders accountable who say they want a clean energy transition but whose actions do not match their words.

Sign the petition below to urge California’s leaders to take this important movement statewide.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Newsom,

California has helped lead the way in electric vehicle investments and clean energy commitments. Yet many politicians who claim they want a cleaner and better future for future generations still condone and promote investment in aging, damaging fossil fuel infrastructure. Frustrated with this disconnect, the generations that will feel the most consequential impact from inaction have taken matters into their own hands. Their efforts have led to an increasing number of new gas station bans across parts of the state. And the special interests who stand in their way have taken notice.

This state is already facing unprecedented climate and weather events that are wreaking havoc. Further delay of needed actions will only exacerbate the oncoming crises. Please advocate for gas station divestment at the state level. Show through your actions that you hear the concerns of youth and that you will work on their behalf to ensure the world they want and deserve.

Sincerely,
