Don’t Throw Gas on Wildfires

Target: Willie Phillips, Chair of Federal Energy Regulatory Commission

Goal: Do not expand pipeline in Pacific Northwest that would undermine regional climate goals.

A proposed new pipeline threatens actions put in place to protect one of the nation’s most climate-vulnerable regions: the Pacific Northwest. Leaders from Washington State, Oregon, and California have asked the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to halt plans for expansion of a gas pipeline from Canada that would sprawl through the entire region. They stress that this pipeline would completely upend the states’ commitments to cleaner renewable energy transition.

FERC itself has assessed that the project would equal the presence of nearly three-quarters of a million new gas vehicles on the region’s highways. In addition, compressor stations linked to the project have been associated with high output of toxins and pollutants, including cancer-causing agents. The Pacific Northwest is already prone to dangerous droughts, wildfires, and heat waves believed to be fueled by the climate crisis.

Sign the petition below to prevent a federal agency from adding more fuel on the fire.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chair Phillips,

Three of the four states that will feel the direct impact of a GTN Xpress pipeline expansion have implored you to reconsider these plans. This expansion, by the agency’s own estimation, would add the equivalent of 700,000 vehicles’ worth of greenhouse gas emissions. The public health risk from compressor station pollutants is also a concern that should not be dismissed.

The laws and commitments implemented by these states in an effort to save themselves from a relentless cycle of drought and wildfires should likewise matter. Please listen to these concerns and proceed with partnership, not protest.

Sincerely,
