Honor Oaths to Protect Whales and Help Rid the World of Poisonous Gases

Goal: Do not move forward with large-scale liquid natural gas project that will harm whales and break climate pledges.

Moon, a humpback whale, reportedly traversed thousands of miles of sea with a broken back caused by a ship strike. When a proposed new liquid natural gas project goes into effect off Canada’s British Columbia coast, the number of these tragedies is expected to increase as much as 30 times higher than current levels. The project will bring an average of 350 new vessels to the area, once again endangering humpback and fin whale populations that are only now beginning to recover from previous threats.

Harm to wildlife is not the only environmental danger brought by this initiative. The project is also forecast to emit over four million tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year. It will likely shatter Canada’s previous Paris Climate Accords pledges to lower carbon and other greenhouse gas emissions.

Dear Prime Minister Trudeau,

LNG Canada has been touted as a big boon for energy investments. Never mind that this project defies every clean energy and climate-related oath that that the nation has ever made. And never mind how the significant increase in ship traffic will once again imperil storied populations of humpback and fin whales.

When will this country—and the world—learn that short-term gains can never overpower the long-term damage that almost always results? Please expand your tunnel vision and evaluate the bigger picture…not just for Canada but for the entire planet. Consider if this project is truly in your best interest before you cannot turn back.
