People will do the most heinous things when they are starving. And I have no doubt these people are starving, afterall, one must be at rock bottom to eat a rodent. Someone once said that all suffering begins with human suffering. Here is the root of these desperate inhumane brutalities. SA has a condemnable record of caring for their poor, destitute citizenry. This does not excuse barbaric torture of innocent animals, and neither does this excuse the SA government from providing for its poorest. Both animal welfare laws need strengthening – in this instance, squirrels – as well as provisions for the poorest. Let us, in all things and toward every living thing, perform acts of mercifulness and charity.
